Dressing Joan Alleyn
5th March 2026

Dressing Joan Alleyn
What a beautiful sunny day for the March monthly meeting yesterday.
Eighteen members attended today to watch and listen to Penny Evans ( a fellow U3a member who volunteers at the original Rose Theatre ). She gave a very interesting and interactive talk on late Tudor costume assisted by dresser (Julia) and model Mary ( or Mrs Alleyn). Penny dressed Mary in a replica Tudor outfit based on an Elizabethan portrait (1586) bringing Tudor costume to life layer by layer, explaining all the while about different fabrics, how social status dictated what you wore and many lesser known tales and facts related to the topic.
At the end most members joined in with a lively Elizabethan jig to finish.
Lots of questions were asked ( and answered) and the whole experience went down really well. A very big thank you to Penny. (And assistants Julian and Mary).
